Bulimia Nervosa

Source: PHQandA, Message 823.

MEDICAL INFORMATION: BULIMIA NERVOSA

“Bulimia nervosa is a disorder characterized by repeated episodes of binge eating followed by purging (self-induced vomitting or taking laxatives, or excessive exercising to counteract the effects of bingeing. As in anorexis nervosa, most people who have bulimia are female, are deeply concerned about the body shape and weight, and belong to the middle or upper socioeconomic classes.

Bingeing (rapidly and quickly consuming relatively large amounts of food while feeling a loss of control) is followed by intense distress as well asby purging, rigorous dieting, and excessive exercising. The amount of food consumed in a binge may be quite large or no larger than a normal meal. Emotional stress often triggers bingeing, which is usually done insecret. A person must binge at least twice a week to be diagnosed as having bulimia nervosa but may binge more often.

Self-induced vomiting can erode tooth enamel, enlarge the salivary glands in the cheeks (parotid glands), and inflame the esophagus. Vomiting and purging can lower potassium levels in the blood, causing abnormal heart rhythm.

Compared with people who have anorexia nervosa, those who have bulimia nervosa tend to be more aware of their behavior and to feel remorseful orguilty about it.”

Hormone Imbalance

Message 683. Jan 26, 2001

Madical Information:

”Hormones are substances released into the bloodstream from a gland or organ that affect activity in the cells at another site. Most hormones are proteins composed of amino acid chains of varying length. Others aresteroid, fatty substances derived from cholesterol. Very small amounts of hormones can trigger very large responses in the body. Hormones bind to receptors on a cell’s surface or inside a cell. The binding of a hormone to a receptor speeds up, slows down, or in some other way alters the cell’s function. Ultimately, hormones control the function of entire organs. They control growth and development, reproduction, and sexual characteristics. They influence the way the body uses and stores energy. Hormones also control the volume of fluid and the levels of salt and sugar in the blood. Some hormones affect only one or two organs, while others affect the whole body.

MAJOR HORMONES:
(Where it is produced and its function.)
  1. Aldosterone — Adrenal glands — Helps regulate salt and water balanceby retaining salt and water and excreting potassium.
  2. Antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin) — Pituitary gland — Causes kidneys to retain water and, along with aldosterone helps control blood pressure.
  3. Corticosteroid — Adrenal glands — Has widespread effects throughout the body, especially has anti-inflammatory action; maintains blood sugarlevel, blood pressure, and muscle strength; helps control salt and water balance.
  4. Corticotropin — Pituitary gland — Controls the production and secretion of hormones by the adrenal cortex.
  5. Erythropoietin — Kidneys — Stimulates red blood production.
  6. Estrogen — Ovaries — Controls the development of female sex characteristics and the reproductive system.
  7. Glucagon — Pancreas — Raises the blood sugar level.
  8. Growth hormone — Pituitary gland — controls growth and development; promotes protein production.
  9. Insulin — Pancreas - Lowers the blood sugar level; affects the metabolism of glucose, protein, and fat throughout the body.
  10. Luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone — Pituitarygland — Control reproductive functions, including the production of spermand semen, egg maturation, and menstrual cycles; control male and female sexual characteristics (including hair distribution, muscle formation, skin texture and thickness, voice, and perhaps even personality traits).
  11. Oxytocin — Pituitary gland — Causes muscles of the uterus and milkducts in the breast to contract.
  12. Parathyroid hormone — Parathyroid gland — Controls bone formation andthe excretion of calcium and phosphorous.
  13. Progesterone — Ovaries — Prepares the lining of the uterus of implantation of a fertilized egg and readies the mammary glands to secrete milk.
  14. Prolactin — Pituitary gland — Starts and maintains milk production inthe mammary glands.
  15. Renin and Angiotensin — kidnesy — Control blood pressure.
  16. Thyroid hormone — Thyroid gland — Regulates growth, maturation, and the speed of metabolism.
  17. Thyroid-stimulating hormone — Pituitary gland — Stimulates the production and secretion of hormones by the thyroid gland.”
PRANIC HEALING TREATMENT:
  1. Apply general sweeping with LWG for 3 cycles.
  2. Scan the chakras and the glands. Note which are overactivated or underactivated.
  3. Sweep the ajna and pituitary gland. Energize with LWG, then more of LWV.

Cerebral Palsy

Source: PHQandA: Message 680.

MEDICAL INFORMATION:
”Cerebral Palsy is a condition characterized by poor muscle control, spasticity, paralysis, and other neurological deficiencies resulting from brain injury that occurs during pregnancy, during birth, after birth or before age 5. Cerebral palsy isn’t a disease, and it isn’t progressive. The parts of the brain that control muscle movements are particularly vulnerable to injury in premature and young infants.

Symptoms:
  1. Spastic - in which the muscles are stiff and weak. Stiffness may affect all the arms and legs, mainly the legs, or only the arm and leg on one side. The affected arms and legs are poorly developed, stiff, and weak.
  2. Choreoathetoid - movements of the arms, legs, and body are slow, writhing, and uncontrollable, but they may also be abrupt and jerky. Strong emotion make the movements worse; sleep makes them disappear.
  3. Ataxic - muscle coordination is poor, and muscle weakness and trembling occur. Children with this disorder have difficulty making rapid or fine movements and walk unsteadily, with legs widely spaced.
  4. Mixed - in which 2 of the above type, most often spastic and choreo athetoid, are combined.
In all forms of cerebral palsy, speech may be difficult to understand because the child has difficulty controlling the muscles involved in speech. Most children with cerebral palsy have other disabilities, such as below-normal intelligence; some have severe mental retardation. However, about 40 per cent of children with cerebral palsy have normal or near-normal intelligence. About 25 percent, most often those with the spastic type - have seizures (epilepsy).”

PRANIC HEALING TREATMENT:
  1. Apply general sweeping 2 or 3 times.
  2. Sweep the crown, forehead, ajna, back head, jaw minor, throat, secondary throat and the entire head and brain thoroughly and alternately with LWG & LWV.
  3. Energize the crown, forehead, ajna, and throat with LWG, then more of LWV. Make them bigger.
  4. Energize the back head, jaw minor, secondary throat chakras with LWG, then with more LWV.
  5. Sweep front and back heart chakra. Energize back heart with LWG, then more of LWV.
  6. Sweep front and back solar plexus. Energize front solar plexus with WHITE.
  7. Sweep navel chakra. Energize with LWR.
  8. Sweep sex and basic thoroughly and alternately with LWG & LWO. Energize with LWR.
  9. Sweep arms and legs alternately with LWG & LWO. Energize minor chakras of arms and legs with LWR.
  10. Stabilize and release energy.
  11. Repeat treatment 3x a week for the next several years.

Coma

Source: PHQandA, Message 46.

COMA, according to medical information, is a state somewhat like anesthesia or deep sleep, from which a person cannot be aroused at all. A person in a deep coma lacks even the most primitive responses, such as avoiding pain.

Coma may result from:
  1. Stroke - A person can go into a coma after a stroke, either suddenly or gradually over several hours.
  2. Head injury (concussion, cuts, bruises) bledding in or around the brain- A person can lapse into a coma immediately or slowly over several hours after a head injury. The cause of the coma can be direct injury to the brain or bleeding within the skull (hematoma).
  3. Infection (meningitis, encephalitis, sepsis) - Infections of the brain or severe infections outside the brain that produce high fevers, toxic substances in the blood, and low blood pressure can alter brain functionand lead to a coma.
  4. Lack of oxygen - The brain becomes irreversibly damaged after only a few minutes of complete oxygen deprivation. A lack of oxygen occurs most often with acute cardiac arrest, less often with severe lung disease.
  5. Inhaling high levels of carbon monoxide (for example, fumes from car engine or from a home heating system) - Carbon monoxide attaches to the hemoglobin of the blood’s red cells and blocks their capacity to carry oxygen. Severe carbon monoxide poisoning can cause a coma or irreversible brain damage because of oxygen deprivation.
  6. Epileptic seizure - Rarely, a coma follows a seizure, but the coma usually lasts only a few minutes.
  7. Toxic effects of prescription drugs, street drugs, or alcohol - Alcoholin toxicatio can make a person stuporous or produce a coma, especially when the blood alcohol level exceeds 0.2 percent. Many drugs, both prescribed and illicit, can cause coma.
  8. Liver or kidney failure - A coma is dreaded sign of liver failure, asoccurs with acute hepatitis. Kidney failure rarely results in a coma because dialysis can cleanse the blood.
  9. Low or high blood sugar levels - An abnormally low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia) can cause a coma. Immediate treatment with intravenous glucose prevents permanent brain damage. An abnormally high blood sugar level (hyperglycemia) can also cause a coma but is much less common andless severe that that of hypoglycemia.
  10. Low or high body temperature - Very high fevers (above 108 F) can damage the brain and cause a coma. A body temperature below 88 F (hypothermia slows the brain to a level of stupor or coma.
  11. Fainting (syncope) - A fainting-induced coma lasts only a few seconds unless the person suffers a head injury during the fall.
  12. Psychiatric disorders - Malingering (pretending to be ill or injured),hysteria, and catatonia (a schizophrenic condition during which a person appears to be in a stupor) may resemble loss of consciousness.
PRANIC HEALING TREATMENT:
  • (First Part) CONTROLLING BRAIN DAMAGE / TO AWAKEN FROM UNCONSCIOUSNESS
  1. general sweeping
  2. localized sweeping on the entire head area with LWG & LWV
  3. sweep crown, forehead, ajna, back head. energize with LWG & LWV.
  4. sweep entire neck area, jaw minor chakras, throat and secondary throat. energize with LWG & LWV
  5. sweep the left/right sides of the brain with LWG, LWV.
  6. sweep the middle region of the brain with LWG, LWV.
  7. sweep the entire brain with LWG, LWV.
  8. sweep spine alternately with LWG & LWV (LEFT, RIGHT & INSIDE OF THE SPINE)

  11. sweep front/back solar plexus and the liver. energize with LWG, LWB & LWV.
  12. sweep basic, sex, and navel. energize with LWR.
  13. sweep meng mein
  14. DISTRIBUTE ENERGY UP & DOWN, UP & DOWN SEVERAL TIMES.
  15. REPEAT THIS TREATMENT SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. SWEEPING AND ENERGIZING SHOULD BE DONE THOROUGHLY.
II. (2nd Part) TREAT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM.

H.I.V.Infection

Source: PHQandA, Message 850.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection (H.I.V.Infection)

MEDICAL INFORMATION:
HUMAN IMMUNO DEFICIENCY VIRUS INFECTION (H.I.V.Infection)

“Human immunodeficiency virus infection is an infection by one of twoviruses that progressively destroys white blood cells called lymphocytes, causing acquired immuno deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and other diseases that result from the impaired immunity. It is a retrovirus, a type of virus that stores genetic information as RNA rather than as DNA. When the virus enters a targeted host cell, it releases its RNA and an enzyme (reverse transcriplase), and then makes DNA using the viral RNA as a pattern. The viral DNA then is incorporated into the host cell DNA. Each time a hostcell divides, it also makes a new copy of the integrated viral DNA alongwith its own genes. The viral DNA can take over the functions of the cell (become activated), causing the cell to produce new virus particles. These new viruses are released from the infected cell to invade other cells.

The transmission of HIV requires contact with a body fluid that contains infected cells or virus particles; such fluids include blood, semen, vaginal secretions, cerebrospinal fluid, and breast milk. HIV is also present in tears, urine, and saliva, but in much lower concentrations.

HIV IS TRANSMITTED IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:
  1. Sexual relations with an infected person, during which the mucous membrane lining the mouth, vagina, or rectum is exposed to contaminated body fluids.
  2. Injection or infusion of contaminated blood, as occurs with blood transfusions, the sharing of needles, or an accidental prick from an HIV-contaminated needle.
  3. Transfer of the virus from an infected mother to a child before or during birth or through the mother’s milk.
SYMPTOMS:
Some people develop symptoms similar to those of infectious mononucleosis a few weeks after first contacting HIV infection. A fever, rashes, swollen lymph nodes, and general discomfort can alst 3 to 14 days. Most symptoms then disappear, although the lymph nodes may stay enlarged. Additional symptoms may not appear for years. However, large amounts of the virus circulates in the blood and other body fluids immediately, so a person becomes contagious soon after becoming infected. Within several months of contracting HIV, people may repeatedly experience mild symptoms that don’t yet fit the definition of full-blown AIDS. A person may have symptoms of HIV infection for years before developing the distinctive infections or tumors that define AIDS.

These symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, a fever that comes and goes, an unwell feeling, fatigue, recurring diarrhea, anemia, and thrush - a fungal infection of the mouth. Weightloss (wasting) is a particularly troublesome problem.

Only a few people with AIDS die from the direct effects of HIV infection. Usually, death is caused by the cumulative effects of many opportunistic infections or tumors. Organisms and diseases that normally pose little threat to healthy people can rapidly lead to death in those with AIDS.

STRATEGIES FOR PREVENTING THE TRANSMISSION OF HIV:

For uninfected people:
- Abstinence
- Safe (protected) sex

For HIV-positive people:
  • Abstinence
  • Safe (protected) sex
  • No blood or organ donation
  • Avoiding pregnancy
  • Notification of previous and prospective partners

For drug abusers:
  • Halting the practice of sharing or reusing needles
  • Entering drug treatment programs

For medical and dental professionals:
  • Wearing of latex gloves whenever there is a possibility ofcontact with body fluids
  • Proper use and disposal of hollow needles

PRANIC HEALING TREATMENT:
  1. General sweeping with LG several times.

Healing a Business

Source: PHQandA, Message 1584

Thank you for your email.
You are correct. Pranic Healing principles are used for healing businesses and financial conditions. Specialized detailed techniques for this application are taught in the GMCKS Kriyashakti Course and Pranic Feng Shui Course.

Using Advanced PH techniques:

- For improved financial condition use Self Healing;
- For business, visualize business as ONE entity or ONE body.
  1. Invoke and scan before, during and after treatment.
  2. Do abdominal breathing 6-3-6-3 for five cycles before starting treatment. Continue the same abdominal breathing during the entire treatment.
  3. General sweeping.
  4. Localized thorough sweeping on the front and back solar plexus chakras using EV. Energize completely using EV.
  5. Localized thorough sweeping on the front and back heart chakras. Energize through the back heart using LWG then LWV. If depleted, visualize the chakra becoming brighter as you energize and say:”... bigger, bigger, bigger.”
  6. Localized thorough sweeping on the navel, meng mein, sex and basic chakras using LWG then LWO. Energize men mein chakra lightly with W. Energize completely the navel, sex and basic chakras with LWR.
  7. Localized thorough sweeping on the ajna, crown, and throat chakras using EV. Energize with EV.
  8. Do distributive sweeping up and down 10 times in front. Distributive sweeping up and down 10 times at the back.
Stabilize and release projected pranic energy.
Repeat treatment 1-3 times per week depending on the need.

Recommend:
  1. Regular daily light physical exercise for one-hour per session.
  2. Write down a plan of action for the business and for each project of the business. Include the primary objective, time tables, assignment of personnel, materials and objective for each portion; and the amount of income you want from the effort. Give thanks for the desired outcome.
  3. Regular PROPER practice of the Planetary Meditation for Peace ( also known as the Meditation on Twin Hearts).
  1. Include the recommended physical exrecises.
  2. If there are more than one worker in the business, it is recommended that the workers practice the Meditation together as a group. This will promote harmony, peace and good health in the work place and increase creativity and productivity levels. If you are alone in the business, organize a group to do the Meditation together. Doing the Meditation and Blessings in group raises the energy level exponentially. The level of energy is much more than if the same number of persons does the Meditation individually separately.
  3. During the blessing portion of the Meditation,
  • Visualize the business and its projects, you may also put the written business activities/plans, or picture of the business or project in the centre of the group,
  • Smile,
  • Project blessings of loving kindness, prosperity, abundance, harmony, progress, good health and spiritual development to the business and all those connected to the business
  • Visualize the business or project and all the persons connected with the business to be bright, smilling and happy
  • Create a permeable auric shield for the business : use brilliant white core. The first outer layer is LWR then LV.
  • Continue with the rest of the Meditation including the recommended physical exercises after the Meditation.
  • Re-energize once a day or at least 3 times per week.
  1. Tithe in advance 10% of the total income you want to make. This is very important.
  2. A Blessed crystal may be used to assist in the maintenance of the desired energy level in the work place.

Over Weight (Obesity)

Source: PHQandA, Message 1203
Pranic Healing Treatment for Overweight

MEDICAL INFORMATION: OBESITY / OVERWEIGHT

“Obesity is excess fat stored in the body. Since the body cannot store protein or carbohydrates, the excess is converted to fat and stored. One pound of fat represents about 3,500 excess Calories. About 25% of the U.S. population is overweight. But being obese is different from being overweight. An individual is considered obese when weight is 20% (25% in women) or more over the maximum desirable for their height. When the excess weight begins to interfere with vital functions such as breathing, it is considered morbid obesity.

Obesity will increase the risk of illness and death due to diabetes, stroke, coronary artery disease, and kidney and gallbladder disorders. The more overweight, the higher the risk becomes. Obesity has been implicated in increased incidence of some types of cancer.

It is thought that genetic factors play a part in the development of obesity; children of obese parents are 10 times more likely to be obese than children with parents of normal weight. Common causes eating more food than the body can use inadequate physical activity or exercise.

To help prevent an increase in weight: avoid excess alcohol consumption, stress, depression, boredom, frustration, and poor eating habits. Avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise daily, or at least 3 times a week. Increase the current level of activity. Eat less food that is high in fat and sugar. Avoid drugs that claim to aid in weight loss. For additional help in losing weight, join a support group. Many people find it easier to follow a reduction diet and exercise program if they join a group of people with similar problems. Set realistic goals for weight reduction. A loss of 1 to 2.5 pounds a week may seem slow, but 1 pound of fat lost a week equals 52 pounds in a year.

PRANIC HEALING TREATMENT:

Invocation and thanksgiving before and after the treatment. Scan and re-scan before, during, and after the treatment.
  1. Apply Pranic Psychotherapy treatment for stress and anxiety.
  2. Apply general sweeping with LWG 3 times.
  3. Apply localized sweeping on the front and back solar plexus chakra and on the liver with LWG. Or, apply “Cleansing the Internal Organs technique.”
  4. Energize the solar plexus chakra with LWG, LWB, then with LWV.
  5. Apply localized sweeping on the basic and navel chakras. Energize with LWR.
  6. Apply “Cleansing the Blood Technique”
  7. Apply localized sweeping on the front and back heart chakra. Energize the back heart chakra with LWG, then with more of LWV.
  8. Apply localized sweeping on the crown, forehead, ajna, back head, throat chakras with LWG & LWV. Energize them with LWG, then with more of LWV.
  9. Stabilize and cut the connecting cord.
  10. Repeat treatment for about 3 times a week.
  11. Follow the doctor’s order.

Schizophrenia

Source: PHQandA, Message 1708

Schizophrenia as a Developmental Disorder

It is indeed a trying experience to watch loved ones go through illness, especially a stigmatized and misunderstood one like mental illness.

The following medical background looks at the condition with a different perspective, as a developmental disorder. The human brain is a marvel. It can re-assign functions when one or more parts is damaged or malfunctioning. Once the physical brain is assisted by the healers to reach proper function, the patient would still have to learn to do self healing to maintain the proper health of mind and body.

Medical Background:

Schizophrenia is a mental illness with 2.5 million victims in the United States alone. The first symptoms usually appear when people are in their late 20s, but neuroscientists now believe that the seeds of the disorder are often sown during fetal development.

That is when the brain is wired up; nerve cells grow and divide, building connections with each other. The basic flaw in the brains of many schizophrenics seems to be that certain nerve cells migrate to the wrong areas when the brain is first taking shape, leaving small regions of the brain permanently out of place or miswired. Such errors in neural architecture may have one or more causes, which remain to be discovered.

The chief symptoms of schizophrenia include apathy, a blunting of emotions, delusions and the hearing of internal voices. Once these symptoms begin, they typically wax and wane for the rest of a person's life.

The origins of the disorder have long been mysterious. Once attributed to poor communication within families, the condition is now recognized as a disease of the brain, as seen in differences between schizophrenic and normal brains.

The idea that these differences arise during fetal development, said Dr.David Shore, chief of the Schizophrenia Research Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Md., "is one of the leading candidates for explaining how the changes we see in the brains of schizophrenics might have come about."

But that theory does not solve the entire puzzle. "Schizophrenia is probably many different kinds of problems that converge on the same syndrome, not just a single disease," said Dr. Daniel Weinberger, chief of the clinical Brain Disorders Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health. "But based on the weight of evidence, half or more of schizophrenia seems to be due to abnormalities in fetal brain development."

Evidence for that new theory comes from several different sources, including autopsies of patients' brains, family movies taken when patients were as young as 2 and epidemiological data.
One of the more convincing reports, based on tissue from autopsies and published this month in The Archives of General Psychiatry, showed neurons out of place in the prefrontal areas of 7 of 20 brains from patients with schizophrenia and in none of the 20 brains from people without the disorder. The study is the fourth of its kind to report wayward cells in various parts of the cortex in people with schizophrenia.

The out-of-place cells are unexpectedly large residues of the neural subplate, a structure that guides other neurons to their proper sites. The subplate forms about the fourth month of pregnancy. It gradually disappears almost entirely within the first month of life, having performed its task of aiming neurons toward their location in the cortex.

"The migration of brain cells through the neural subplate occurs almost entirely in the second trimester of fetal development," said Dr. Steven G. Potkin, a psychiatrist at the University of California at Irvine and a co-author of the study, with Dr. William E. Bunney and Dr. Edward Jones.

"If you disrupt this migration, cells end up in the wrong place or have faulty connections -- and that's what we found in the brains of the schizophrenic patients," Potkin said. "The maldistribution of these cells suggests an abnormality in the subplate."

Experiments on cats by Dr. Carla Shatz, a neuroscientist at the University of California at Berkeley, has shown that making cuts in the subplate at an equivalent period in the development of the cat brain produces cortical cells that are miswired or out of place. Just what might cause the neural subplate to fail to perform its duties isa matter of surmise. Potkin speculated that "there may be a wide range of causes, from a faulty genetic mechanism to environmental insults, like the mother having a virus that penetrates the placenta, all of which interfere with the operation of the neural subplate during the critical months of fetal brain development."

One nagging question for proponents of the new theory is why no symptoms of schizophrenia appear for two decades or more if the brain abnormalities are present from birth.

One answer is that there are, indeed, signs of coming trouble throughout life but that they are subtle and easily missed. The British Medical Research Council tracked every child born in Britain in the first week of March 1946, assessing them every two years or so until they reached the age of 43. Dr. Robin Murray, a British psychiatrist, found subtle childhood differences among those who later developed schizophrenia.

At most milestones of neurological development -- analyzed by looking at things like when each infant first sat up and teacher ratings of each child's performance -- the development of the schizophrenic group, on average, was delayed.

"There were no gross abnormalities, but a lifelong pattern, on average, of delayed maturation of their brains," said Dr. Weinberger, who reviewed the cumulative evidence linking lifelong neurological problems to schizophrenia in The Lancet, a medical journal, last year. "For instance, at six months, about a third of babies are two weeks or more late in sitting up. For those who later developed schizophrenia, two-thirds were late. As a whole, their lags suggest subtle abnormalities in neural development."

When researchers in a 1994 study asked the families of patients with schizophrenia to provide them with home movies of the patients as children, they found more signs of unusual neural development. At age 2, for instance, these children tended to display slightly odd hand movements that would not have troubled their parents at the time but would have been recognized by a trained eye as a sign of troubled motor development.

The study by Dr. E. Fuller Turrey, M.D. reviewed 65 research projects carried out on individuals with schizophrenia who had never been treated with any antipsychotic medication. In many, the individual had only recently been diagnosed with the disease. The projects measured the structure and function of brains of individuals with schizophrenia and compared these with normal controls. Neurological and neuropsychological measures of brain function showed the most consistent and largest differences between patients and controls. Measures of brain structure, such as MRIs, and measures of brain metabolism, such as PET scans, were also significantly different but less impressive. The brain abnormalities were not localized to a single part of the brain but instead implicated a variety of interrelated regions at the base of the brain.

Developmental neurobiologists funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) have found that schizophrenia may be a developmental disorder resulting when neurons form inappropriate connections during fetal development. These errors may lie dormant until puberty, when changes in the brain that occur normally during this critical stage of maturation interact adversely with the faulty connections. This research has spurred efforts to identify prenatal factors that may have some bearing on the apparent developmental abnormality.

In other studies, investigators using brain-imaging techniques have found evidence of early biochemical changes that may precede the onset of disease symptoms, prompting examination of the neural circuits that are most likely to be involved in producing those symptoms. Meanwhile, scientists working at the molecular level are exploring the genetic basis for abnormalities in brain development and in the neurotransmitter systems regulating brain function.

The term "schizophrenia" was introduced in 1911 by a Swiss psychiatrist, Eugen Bleuler. The word comes from the Greek schizo meaning "split" and phrenia meaning "mind." Bleuler wanted to convey the split between what is perceived, what is believed, and what is objectively real. He did not mean that the person with schizophrenia is split into two personalities, but that there is a splitting away of the personality from reality. The concept of "split," however, has led to schizophrenia being confused with multiple personality, a less common and very different psychiatric disorder, much publicized through such stories as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Three Faces of Eve, and Sybil. Today, many health care professionals regret the existence of the term "schizophrenia" because of the confusion and misunderstanding that surround it.

Added to this basic confusion is a history of blame. Families agree that blame is a major stumbling block to seeking and receiving support.

In the late 1800s and the early part of this century, three competing views about the nature of mental illness gained acceptance in the psychiatric profession.

Biological psychiatry grew from the research of Dr. Emil Kraepelin in Germany; psychoanalysis from the findings of Dr. Sigmund Freud and his colleagues in their studies on neuroses in Austria; and behaviourism from the work of Dr. John B. Watson in the United States. Kraepelin's views predominated the thinking of psychiatrists in Europe, while both psychoanalysis and behaviourism (see Glossary) flourished in North America (Andreasen, The Broken Brain, pp. 11-20).

In the 1950s, many North American psychiatrists began to believe that schizophrenia resulted from a form of psychic trauma inflicted on the individual early in life, typically by parents. Mothers of those with schizophrenia were believed to be over-anxious, obsessive, and domineering. These women were labelled "schizophrenogenic." One mother said she almost understood this. "When you are pushing to get help for your child, it is easy for some to 'put the cart before the horse' and point to this pushiness and tension as the cause of your child's problem, rather than the result of it." Gradually, blame was placed on the family as a unit. Theorists noticed poor family functioning where there was someone with schizophrenia, and confused the effect of the illness with its cause.

Two other theories contributed to the mythology surrounding schizophrenia. The American psychoanalyst Thomas Szasz pronounced that schizophrenia, like all other mental illnesses, is a set of behaviours, not a disease. The late R.D. Laing, a British psychiatrist, suggested that it is really a "healthy" response to an insane world. People burdened with terrible stress act "crazy" in an effort to adapt.

Scientific research and factual data have discredited these theories. Unfortunately, they were all popular enough at one time to have gained public attention. You may still run into health care professionals who will suggest that you "caused" your relative's illness, and that a continuing family relationship may hinder recovery.

Aside from the history of blame, the symptoms of the illness itself can often add to the stigma of schizophrenia. The odd and unpredictable behaviour, poor functioning, or lack of good health habits can be disturbing to others. News coverage on acts of violence or suicides committed by people reported as having schizophrenia serve to add to the stigma, even if unintentionally.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's Disease

MEDICAL INFORMATION: LOU GERIGH'S DISEASE

"Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neuromuscular condition characterized by weakness, muscle wasting, fasciculations and increased reflexes. Approximately 30,000 Americans currently have the disease. The annual incidence rate is one to two cases per 100,000. The disease is most commonly diagnosed in middle age and affects more men than women. It usually presents with problems in dexterity or gait resulting from muscle weakness. Difficulty in speaking or swallowing is the initial symptom in the bulbar form of the disease.

Over a period of months or years, patients with ALS develop severe, progressive muscular weakness and other symptoms caused by loss of function in both upper and lower motor neurons. Sphincter control, sensory function, intellectual abilities and skin integrity are preserved. Patients become completely disabled, often requiring ventilatory support and gastrostomy. Death usually occurs within five years of diagnosis and is attributed to respiratory failure or cachexia. The etiology of the disease is unknown. Current research is focused on abnormalities of neuronal cell metabolism involving glutamate and the role of potential neurotoxins and neurotrophic factors. New drugs are being developed based on these theories. Current management involves aggressive, individualized alleviation of symptoms and complications."

PRANIC HEALING TREATMENT:

Diabetes - Type 2

Source: PHQandA, Message 2418.

Medical Background:

The two major forms of diabetes are type 1 (previously called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes) and type 2 (previously called non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or maturity-onset diabetes). In type 2 diabetes, diabetes mellitus is caused by impaired insulin secretion, peripheral insulin resistance, increased hepatic glucose production, and impaired priming of the pancreas by the gut after an oral glucose load.Type 2 diabetes is most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90% of cases. The disease mechanisms in type 2 diabetes are not wholly known, but some experts suggest that it may involve the following three stages in most patients:

The first stage in type 2 diabetes is the condition called insulin resistance; although insulin can attach normally to receptors on liver and muscle cells, certain mechanisms prevent insulin from moving glucose (blood sugar) into these cells where it can be used. Most type 2 diabetics produce variable, even normal or high, amounts of insulin, and in the beginning this amount is usually sufficient to overcome such resistance. Over time, the pancreas becomes unable to produce enough insulin to overcome resistance. In type 2 diabetes the initial effect of this stage is usually an abnormal rise in blood sugar right after a meal (called post prandial hyperglycemia). This effect is now believed to be particularly damaging to the body. Eventually, the cycle of elevated glucose further impairs and possibly destroys beta cells, thereby stopping insulin production completely and causing full-blown diabetes. This is made evident by fasting hyperglycemia, in which elevated glucose levels are present most of the time. A complete lack of symptoms is the most common presentation of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is often first detected by a screening urinalysis, obtained for other reasons. Patients may only have fatigue and a vague sense of “not feeling well.” Female patients may present with vulvovaginitis or intertriginous fungal infections.

Diabetes during pregnancy

Source: PHQandA, Message 2283.

The blood glucose levels of the expectant mother cross into the placenta and affects the development of the unborn child. It is important for the mother to religiously follow her physician’s advise on the regular monitoring and maintenance of her blood glucose levels. If exercise and diet fails to control blood glucose levels, insulin may be needed. The medical doctor will determine when that is neccessary to protect the development of the unborn child and the mother’s health.

Pranic Healing:

Insulin Resistant Diabetes

Subcutaneous Insulin Resistant Diabetes

Source: PHQandA, Message 2219.

Medical Background:

In numerous patients with diabetes mellitus, a defectin the absorption of subcutaneously injected insulin has been suspected as an explanation for diabetic instability. The common clinical characteristic of these patients is poor metabolic control when insulinis injected subcutaneously, but good metabolic control when the insulin is infused intravenously. We have used three approaches to attempt to identify patients with “subcutaneous-insulin resistance.” This syndrome is extremely rare and that misdiagnosis is common. Obesity is associated with insulin resistance, particularly when body fat has a central distribution.

However, insulin resistance also frequently occurs in apparently lean individuals. It has been proposed that these lean insulin-resistant individuals have greater amounts of body fat than lean insulin-sensitive subjects. Alternatively, their body fat distribution may be different. Obesity is associated with elevated plasma leptin levels, but some studies have suggested that insulin sensitivity is an additional determinant of circulating leptin concentrations. Accumulation of intra-abdominal fat correlates with insulin resistance, where as subcutaneous fat deposition correlates with circulating leptin levels. We conclude that the concurrent increase in these two metabolically distinct fat compartments is a major explanation for the association between insulin resistance and elevated circulating leptin concentrations in lean and obese subjects. The role of insulin resistance in metabolic diseases has received considerable attention in recent years. Insulin resistance has been suggested to be an important risk factor in the development of the metabolic syndrome, a cluster of disorders comprising glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and dysfibrinolysis that is associated with type 2 diabetes and cardio vascular disease. It is evident that obesity is a risk factor for these same conditions and that this association is not only related to the degree of obesity, but also appears tobe critically dependent on body fat distribution. Thus, individuals with greater degrees of centraladiposity appear to develop this syndrome more frequently than those with a peripheral body fat distribution.

Avian Influenza

Source: PHQandA, Message 2974.

Bird Flu - H5N1

Medical Background:
Bird flu is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These flu viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However, bird flu is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick and kill them. There are many different subtypes of type A influenza viruses. These subtypes differ because of certain proteins on the surface of the influenza A virus (hemagglutinin [HA] and neuraminidase [NA] proteins). There are 16 different HA subtypes and 9 different NA subtypes of flu A viruses. Many different combinations of HA and NA proteins are possible. Each combinationis a different subtype. All known subtypes of flu A viruses can be found in birds. However, when we talk about “bird flu” viruses, we are referring to influenza A subtypes chiefly found in birds. They do not usually infect humans, even though we know they can. When we talk about “human flu viruses” we are referring to those subtypes that occur widely in humans. There are only three known A subtypes of human flu viruses (H1N1, H1N2, and H3N2); it is likely that some genetic parts of current human influenza A viruses came from birds originally. Influenza A viruses are constantly changing, and they might adaptover time to infect and spread among humans.

Symptoms of bird flu in humans have ranged from typical flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat and muscle aches) to eye infections, pneumonia, severe respiratory diseases (such as acute respiratory distress), and other severe and life-threatening complications. The symptoms of bird flu may depend on which virus caused the infection. Infected birds shed flu virus in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Susceptible birds become infected when they have contact with contaminated excretions or surfaces that are contaminated with excretions. It is believed that most cases of bird flu infection in humans have resulted from contact with infected poultry or contaminated surfaces. The spread of avian influenza viruses from one ill person to another has been reported very rarely, and transmission has not been observed to continue beyond one person. Studies done in laboratories suggest that the prescription medicines approved for human flu viruses should work in preventing bird flu infection in humans. However, flu viruses can become resistant to these drugs, so these medications may not always work.

Additional studies are needed to prove theeffectiveness of these medicines. The risk from bird flu is generally low to most people because the viruses occur mainly among birds and do not usually infect humans. However, during an outbreak of bird flu among poultry (domesticated chicken, ducks, turkeys), there is a possible risk to people who have contact with infected birds or surfaces that have been contaminated with excretions from infectedbirds. The current outbreak of avian influenza A(H5N1) among poultry in Asia and Europe (see below) isan example of a bird flu outbreak that has causedhuman infections and deaths. In such situations, people should avoid contact with infected birds or contaminated surfaces, and should be careful when handling and cooking poultry. Influenza A (H5N1) virus – also called H5N1 virus – is an influenza A virus subtype that occurs mainly in birds. Like all bird flu viruses, H5N1 virus circulates among birds world wide, is very contagious among birds, and can be deadly. Outbreaks of influenza H5N1 occurred among poultry in eight countries in Asia (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Laos , South Korea , Thailand , and Vietnam) during late 2003 and early 2004. At that time, more than 100 million birds in the affected countries either died from the disease or were killed in order to try to control the outbreak. By March 2004, the outbreak was reported to be under control. Beginning in late June 2004, however, new outbreaks of influenza H5N1 among poultry were reported by several countries in Asia (Cambodia, China [ Tibet ], Indonesia, Kazakhastan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Russia [ Siberia ], Thailand, and Vietnam). It is believed that these outbreaks are ongoing. Most recently, influenza H5N1 has been reported among poultry in Turkey and Romania. Human infections of influenza A (H5N1) have been reported in Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The H5N1 virus does not usually infect humans. In1997. However, the first case of spread from a bird to a human was seen during an outbreak of bird flu in poultry in Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region. The virus caused severe respiratory illness in 18 people, 6 of whom died. Since that time, there have been other cases of H5N1 infection among humans. Recent human cases of H5N1 infection that have occurred in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam have coincided with large H5N1 outbreaks in poultry. The World Health Organization (WHO) also has reported human cases in Indonesia. Most of these cases have occurred from contact with infected poultry or contaminated surfaces; however, it is thought that a few cases of human-to-human spread of H5N1 have occurred. So far, spread of H5N1 virus from person to person has been rare and has not continued beyond one person. However, because all influenza viruses have the ability to change, scientists are concerned that the H5N1 virus one day could be able to infect humans and spread easily from one person to another. Because these viruses do not commonly infect humans, there is little or no immune protection against them in the human population.

If the H5N1 virus were able to infect people and spread easily from person to person, an influenza pandemic (world wide outbreak of disease) could begin. No one can predict when a pandemic might occur. However, experts from around the world are watching the H5N1 situation in Asia very closely and are preparing for the possibility that the virus may begin to spread more easily and widely from person to person.

If the patient is already infected and with fever.
Invoke and scan before, during and after treatment. NOTE: For infants and children:
    • just use W for the entire treatment,
    • emphasizegeneral sweeping,
    • energizing should be done gentlyand gradually.
  1. General sweeping several times, alternately with LWG and LWB.
  2. Localized thorough sweeping on the front and back solar plexus chakra and the liver. Emphasis is on thorough cleansing. This is very important. To facilitate the expelling of diseased energy, energize the front solar plexus chakra with LWG then with lots more of LWB.
  3. Energize the front solar plexus with LWO. This step is only for experienced advanced pranic healers. Do not apply this step if the patient is suffering from loose bowel movement or intestinal bleeding.
  4. Localized thorough sweeping on the front and back heart chakra. Energize through the back heart chakra with LWG then with more of ordinary LWV.
  5. Localized thorough sweeping on the front, sides and back of the lungs alternately with LWG and ordinary LWV. Energize the back of the lungs directly with LWG, LWO then ordinary LWV.
  6. Localized thorough sweeping on the front and back spleen chakra.
  7. Localized thorough sweeping on the abdominal area and the navel chakra. Energize the navel chakra with LWG, LWB then ordinary LWV. Unless the healer is skillful in controlling the color shade of the projected pranic energy, do not use G on the navel chakra if the patient is suffering from intestinal bleeding.
  8. Localized thorough sweeping on the basic chakra.
  9. Localized thorough sweeping on the arms and legs and the hand and sole chakras. Energize the hand and sole chakras with ordinary LWV. Do not repeat this step more than once per day.

Vitiligo

Source: PHQandA, Message 2463. Oct 1, 2004

Medical Background:

Vitiligo is a skin condition of white patches resulting from loss of pigment. Any part of the body may be affected. Melanin, the pigment that determines color of skin, hair, and eyes, is produced in cells called melanocytes. If these cells die or cannot form melanin, the skin becomes lighter or completely white. Affected skin is particularly sensitive to sunlight.

Source-American Vitiligo Research Foundation, Inc.

The condition affects around 1% of the population inall races, but more trouble some in dark skin where there is marked contrast between normal and depigmented areas. Hence the incidence may appear to be higher in pigmented races where the social impact is also greater. Family history of the condition is found in one third of the affected patients. Sex ratio is equal. Half the patients first notice symptoms before 20 years old. It may be precipitated by injury or sunburn. In light skin individuals, vitiligo may only be discernible in summer, when the vitiliginous area becomes sun burnt. There are various theories as to the aetiology of vitiligo; the same mechanism may not apply to all cases.

Vitiligo may rarely be associated with premature greying of hair, retinal pigmentary loss, uveitis, deafness, CNS involvement (Vogt-Koyanagi syndrome).

Other associations include: halo naevus, malignant melanoma, alopecia areata, auto immune thyroid disorders, Addison’s adrenal disease, chronic atrophic gastritis, Pernicious anaemia and diabetes mellitus.

Pranic Healing:
  1. Invoke and scan before, during and after treatment.
  2. General cleansing several times.
  3. Localized cleansing on the affected skin areas alternately with LWG and LWV. Energize with LWB to localize. Energize directly affected skin area(s) using: alternately LWG, LWO, then LWR (skin in areas away from delicate organs) OR: use LWGV then LWGY for skin in areas near where delicate organs are located (skin near spleen, heart, head area).
  4. Localized sweeping on the front, sides and back of the lungs. Directly energize the back of the lungs with LWG, LWO and then with LWR. When energizing with orange prana, point your fingers away from the patient’s head.
  5. Localized thorough sweeping on the basic chakra alternately with LWG and LWO. Energize with LWR.
  6. Localized thorough sweeping on the arms and legs with emphasis on their minor chakras alternately with LWG and LWO. Energize the minor chakras of the arms and legs with LWR.
  7. Localized thorough sweepng on the front and backheart chakra. Energize the heart through the backheart with LWG, then with more of ordinary LWV.
  8. Localized thorough sweeping on the front and backsolar plexus chakra. Energize with LWG nd then with more of ordinary LWV. For experienced advanced pranic healers: localized thorough sweeping on the front and back solar plexus chakra and the liver alternately with LWG and LWO. Energize the solar plexus chakra with LWB, then with LWG and then with LWO.
  9. Localized thorough sweeping on the front and backs pleen chakra with LWG. Energize the spleen with LWG then with ordinary LWV. This has to be done with caution.
  10. Localized thorough sweeping on the kidneys alternately with LWG and LWO Energize them with LWR.
  11. Localized thorough sweeping on the meng mein chakra.
  12. Localized thorough sweeping on the throat and ajna chakras. Energize them with a little of LWG and then with more of ordinary LWV.
  13. Stabilize and release projected pranic energy.
  14. Repeat treatment three times per week for as long as necessary.

Recommend for patient:
  1. To hasten rate of healing, encourage patient to practice regularly the healing meditation, Planetary Meditation for Peace (MTH) unless patient has other conditions that will not allow the practice of the meditation. At 9 years old, this patient may practice the Meditation once per week providing that he does rigorous physical exercise for 30 minutes to one hour before the meditation and again do physical exercises for another 30 mins. right after the meditation. This is to prevent pranic congestion and promote proper assimilation of healing energy.
  2. Regular physical exercise.
  3. Balanced healthy diet including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  4. Engage in a productive enjoyable hobby like doing service for the good of others.
  5. Avoid negative thoughts, emotions, activities and environment.
Please give us updates of your progress with this case.
